The detailed guide below is currently available in English.

How deep should mulch be?

Two to three inches is the sweet spot for most beds: thick enough to block weeds and hold soil moisture, thin enough for rain to get through. Piling mulch deeper than four inches can suffocate roots, and mounding it against trunks invites rot and rodents — the "mulch volcano" that arborists keep warning about.

Bags versus bulk delivery

Bagged mulch is typically sold in 2 or 3 cubic-foot bags and makes sense for small beds; past about a cubic yard, a loose bulk delivery usually costs less per yard and spares your back the unloading. The bag count here assumes the common 2 ft³ bag, so divide by 1.5 instead if your store stocks 3 ft³ bags.

Häufige Fragen

How much does a cubic yard of mulch cover?

One cubic yard covers about 108 ft² at a 3-inch depth, or 162 ft² at 2 inches. Divide your bed area by those figures as a quick sanity check on the result.

Does the volume settle over time?

Yes. Wood mulch compacts and decomposes, losing perhaps a third of its depth in a year. Many gardeners top up with half the original amount each spring.
