Four answers to "what is typical?"

Each of these statistics describes the center or spread of a list from a different angle. The mean divides the total by the count and uses every value, which makes it sensitive to outliers. The median is the middle entry after sorting — or the average of the two middle entries for an even count — and shrugs off extreme values, which is why house prices are reported as medians. The mode is simply the most common value and is the only measure that works on non-numeric data like favorite colors. The range, maximum minus minimum, is the quickest possible gauge of spread, though it depends entirely on the two most extreme points.

Which one should I report?

Use the mean for fairly symmetric data with no wild outliers, the median when a few extreme values would skew the story, and the mode when the most common value itself matters. Reporting two of them, with the range, gives readers the fullest picture.

How do I find the median of an even-length list?

Sort the values and average the middle two. For 1, 3, 8, 10 the median is (3 + 8) ÷ 2 = 5.5. The calculator applies this automatically.
