Dividing the rise evenly

Building codes require every riser in a flight to be the same height, so the layout problem is: how many equal risers divide the total rise as closely as possible to your target? The calculator rounds the total rise divided by the target, then reports the exact height each riser ends up at. Fifteen risers at 7.2 inches beats fourteen at 7.7 when your target was 7.5 — the numbers make the tradeoff visible.

The 2R + T rule

Stair comfort follows an old rule of thumb: twice the riser plus the tread should land near 25 inches. Steep stairs with tall risers want deeper treads; shallow stairs want shorter ones. When 2R + T drifts far from 25, the flight feels wrong long before it fails an inspection, so nudge the tread run and re-check.

Why is there one fewer tread than risers?

The top riser steps onto the finished upper floor, which acts as the final tread. Thirteen treads plus the landing serve fourteen rises. If your stairs end at a platform rather than a floor, add one tread.

What rise do I enter for a deck or split level?

Measure from the finished lower surface to the finished upper surface — the walking surfaces, not the framing. Include any floor sheathing or decking that will be added later.
