The detailed guide below is currently available in English.

From footprint to roof surface

A gable roof is two slanted rectangles over the same footprint. The slope stretches each one by the pitch multiplier — the length of the rafter line per foot of horizontal run. Multiply the footprint by that factor and you have the shingled surface. A 6/12 pitch, for instance, stretches the surface by about 11.8%.

Squares, bundles, and waste

Shingles are sold by the square (100 ft² of coverage) and bundled three bundles to a square. Cutting at ridges, valleys, and starter courses always consumes extra material, so an allowance of roughly 10% is standard — more for cut-up roofs with many hips and valleys. The buy figures round up to whole squares and bundles, because partial bundles rarely bridge the gap.

Which pitch do I enter?

Pitch here is the rise over a 12-inch run, written like 6/12. If you know the total rise and the half-span of the building, divide rise by half-span and multiply by 12 to get it.

Does this include underlayment and ridge caps?

No. Underlayment follows roughly the same area, but hip and ridge cap shingles are sold separately by linear foot of ridge and hip line, which this simple model does not measure.
