Average speed is distance over time

Speed answers one question: how far per how long. The base relation is v = d/t, with time in consistent units — this calculator totals your hours, minutes, and seconds and divides the distance by it. The result is shown as meters per second (the scientific unit) alongside km/h, mph, and ft/s; quick mental anchors are that 1 m/s ≈ 3.6 km/h and 60 mph ≈ 26.8 m/s.

Where the number dips below your cruising pace

Average speed bakes every stoplight and slowdown into the total, so it always sits at or below your typical moving speed on routes with interruptions. That is the number that predicts arrival times: 150 km of highway at a cruising 110 km/h but with 20 minutes of city traffic averages nearer 90 km/h overall. For training purposes, pace (minutes per kilometer or mile) is the inverse view and appears on the pace calculator.

Częste pytania

Can I enter just minutes and seconds for a short sprint?

Yes — set hours to 0 (or leave any box at zero) and the calculator uses only the boxes you filled, as long as the combined time is greater than zero. A 100 m sprint in 11.5 seconds comes out around 8.70 m/s.

Why is my average lower than my speedometer reading?

The speedometer samples instantaneous speed, while the average divides the entire elapsed time, including idling at lights and crawling in traffic. Only on a nonstop, constant-speed run do the two match.
