How the conversions work

Every category in this calculator is anchored to one base unit — meters for length, kilograms for weight, seconds for time, and so on. Each unit is stored as its exact factor relative to that base, so a conversion multiplies by the source unit's factor and divides by the target's. Temperature is the one exception, because Celsius and Fahrenheit carry an offset as well as a scale, so it uses dedicated formulas instead of a plain factor.

Precision you can trust

Results keep up to eight significant digits, which is far more precision than everyday measurements carry — a tape measure or kitchen scale cannot even use them. Whole numbers print plainly, and trailing zeros are trimmed, so you see 3.2808399 rather than a wall of padded digits. For recipes, workouts, and travel, feel free to round to two or three digits; keep more when a project depends on exact ratios.

자주 묻는 질문

Are the data storage units decimal or binary?

Both. Kilobytes through terabytes use the decimal (SI) scale where each step is 1,000, while kibibytes through tebibytes use the binary scale where each step is 1,024. Storage drive makers quote decimal units, while operating systems often report binary ones, which is why a "1 TB" drive shows less capacity in some tools.

Why is converting temperature different?

Temperature scales do not share a zero point: 0 °C is 32 °F, not 0 °F. Converting therefore needs an offset — multiply by 1.8 and add 32 to go from Celsius to Fahrenheit — rather than the single multiplication other units use.

Which gallon is this, US or UK?

The volume category converts with US customary units by default, so the gallon is the smaller US one (3.785 liters). UK imperial gallons (4.546 liters) are included as a separate entry, so pick "Gallon (UK)" when working with imperial measurements.
