How the mid-parental method works

Height is strongly inherited, and the mid-parental method (also called the Tanner method) averages the two parents' heights, then adds 13 cm for a boy or subtracts 13 cm for a girl to account for the average sex difference in adult stature. Expressed in the classic imperial form, a boy's target is (father's height + mother's height + 5 in) ÷ 2 and a girl's is (father's height + mother's height − 5 in) ÷ 2.

Why the ±7 cm range matters

Genes from grandparents and beyond, nutrition, sleep, chronic illness, and the timing of puberty all push the outcome away from the midpoint, so clinicians quote the prediction with a ±7 cm (±3 in) band that captures the great majority of children. The estimate is most useful as a sanity check on a growth chart: a child tracking well outside the band is worth mentioning to a pediatrician.

Pertanyaan umum

How accurate is the mid-parental prediction?

For most children the final adult height lands within about 7 cm of the target, and roughly nine in ten stay within 10 cm. It is a population average, so an individual child can legitimately beat it.

Can a child be much taller than both parents?

Yes. Recessive height genes, better childhood nutrition, and late puberty all allow a child to exceed the mid-parental target — occasionally by more than the usual ±7 cm band.

Does it matter which parent passes on height?

The method weighs both parents equally, which matches polygenic inheritance well enough for screening. Studies find slightly stronger maternal correlations for some measures, but the difference is too small to change the estimate materially.
