How Roman numerals work
Seven letters carry all the weight: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), and M (1000). Letters are added left to right, except when a smaller letter precedes a larger one — then it is subtracted. So 1999 breaks into M (1000) + CM (900) + XC (90) + IX (9) = MCMXCIX. Only I, X, and C may repeat, and never more than three times.
Why the calculator rejects some strings
Loose Roman numeral writing allows shortcuts like IIIV or CCCC, which makes decoding ambiguous. This converter accepts only the canonical classical form: the subtractive pairs are restricted to IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, and CM, so every accepted numeral corresponds to exactly one number — and every number from 1 to 3999 to exactly one numeral.
Pertanyaan umum
Why does the converter stop at 3999?
Classical notation has no letter for 10,000, and the historical workarounds (a bar over a numeral to multiply by 1,000) are hard to type. 3999, written MMMCMXCIX, is the largest value in pure letter form.
Is there a year zero in Roman numerals?
Roman numerals express counting numbers, and there is no zero among them. The concept of zero arrived in Europe centuries after Rome fell, via Indian and Arabic mathematics.
How do I read a long numeral like MMDCCCXLVIII?
Chunk it into place values: MM (2000) + DCCC (800) + XL (40) + VIII (8) = 2848. The converter does the same chunking automatically when you paste the numeral in.
