What a business loan really costs
Two numbers drive the bill: the rate, charged on the balance every month, and the origination fee, taken once out of your proceeds. A 2% fee on a five-year loan adds roughly 0.4 percentage points a year to the true cost — less obvious on the payment, which is why the effective-cost line above adds the fee back into total interest. Short-term and online products often quote low "factor rates" that translate to much higher APRs, so compare annualized figures, not payment sizes.
Questions fréquentes
How long are typical business loan terms?
Bank term loans and SBA 7(a) loans commonly run 5–10 years for working capital and up to 25 for real estate; online short-term products run 3–24 months at far higher effective rates.
Is the origination fee refundable if I pay off early?
Usually not — it is earned at funding regardless of payoff speed. That makes the fee a bigger share of the cost on loans retired early, which the total-cost line here helps you see before signing.
