How each solid volume is computed

Every shape here reduces to one of a handful of formulas. A cube is the edge length cubed; a rectangular prism is length × width × height. Round shapes bring in π: a cylinder is the circular base area (πr²) times the height, a sphere is 4/3 πr³, and a cone is one third of the cylinder that would contain it. A triangular prism is the area of its triangular face (½ × base × height) swept along its length.

Choosing sensible units

Pick the unit your measurements are already in and the answer comes out in that unit cubed. The conversion rows translate the same volume into the other three units — handy because shipping and storage are often quoted in cubic feet or cubic meters while lab and recipe work favors cubic centimeters. One cubic meter equals one million cubic centimeters, so small-looking metric answers can still be large volumes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my cubic-centimeter answer look so large next to cubic meters?

A centimeter is one hundredth of a meter, so one cubic meter holds 100 × 100 × 100 = 1,000,000 cubic centimeters. The conversion rows under the result always show the same volume in every unit, so you can sanity-check the magnitude.

Can I mix units, such as centimeters for height and meters for radius?

No — each tab applies one unit to all of its dimensions so the formula stays consistent. Convert any odd measurement first, or compute in the unit of the majority and use the conversion rows afterward.
