How the 50/30/20 comparison works

This calculator sorts your categories into three buckets: needs (housing, transportation, groceries, insurance, required debt payments), wants (the catch-all category), and savings. The summary rows show each bucket as a share of your take-home income next to the classic 50/30/20 target, so you can see at a glance which bucket is pushing the budget off balance.

Making use of the leftover

Money left after all categories is unallocated, not free to spend. Giving every dollar a job — topping up an emergency fund, extra debt payments, or a sinking fund for irregular costs — is what turns a static budget into a plan. If the result shows a shortfall, the largest percentage slice is usually the fastest place to trim.

Should I budget gross or take-home income?

Use take-home (net) pay — the amount that actually reaches your account. The 50/30/20 percentages are defined against take-home, and budgeting with gross overstates what you can spend.

Where do irregular expenses fit?

Fold them into a monthly average: an annual $600 car registration is $50 a month. Keeping averages in the "wants & everything else" or a dedicated category stops surprise months from wrecking the plan.
