How to calculate sales tax
Sales tax is a percentage of the pre-tax price. To add it, multiply the before-tax price by the rate and add the result: a $100 purchase taxed at 6.5% gains $6.50 in tax for a $106.50 total. To remove tax from a receipt total, divide by (1 + rate) instead of subtracting — $106.50 at 6.5% divides back to exactly $100.00, because the printed total includes tax on the smaller pre-tax base.
Rates vary by place and product
In the United States there is no national sales tax: states, counties, and cities set their own combined rates, and groceries, medicine, or clothing can be taxed differently (or not at all) depending on the jurisdiction. Many other countries use a value-added tax (VAT) or goods and services tax (GST) instead, usually quoted as a national rate. Check your local rate and enter it above.
Perguntas frequentes
How do I figure out the tax rate from a receipt?
Divide the tax amount by the before-tax price. If a receipt shows $6.50 of tax on a $100.00 purchase, the rate is 6.5%. This calculator works the other direction: give it a rate and one of the prices.
Why is removing tax different from subtracting it?
Tax is charged on the smaller, pre-tax amount, so the tax is not a fixed share of the total. Dividing the total by (1 + rate) undoes the multiplication exactly; subtracting the rate percentage from the total would understate the pre-tax price.
Does this work for VAT and GST?
Yes — the arithmetic is identical. Enter the VAT/GST rate (for example 20% or 10%) and either the exclusive or inclusive price.
