What negative and fractional exponents mean
A positive whole exponent is repeated multiplication: 210 multiplies ten copies of 2 to make 1,024. A negative exponent flips the base into the denominator, so 2−2 = 1 ÷ (2 × 2) = 0.25. A fractional exponent is a root — x1/2 is the square root of x and x1/3 is its cube root — and mixed fractions combine both ideas, with 82/3 equal to the cube root of 8, squared: 4. One edge to remember: a negative base is only well-behaved with whole-number exponents, which is why this calculator declines inputs like (−8)1/2.
Perguntas frequentes
Why is any nonzero number to the power 0 equal to 1?
The pattern of exponents forces it: dividing a power by the base lowers the exponent by one, so following 2³ = 8, 2² = 4, 2¹ = 2 one more step gives 2⁰ = 2 ÷ 2 = 1. The exception 0⁰ is left undefined here.
How do I calculate a cube root with this tool?
Enter the number as the base and 1/3 as the exponent, e.g. base 27 with exponent 0.333333. Better yet, use exactly 1/3 in decimal — the cube root of 27 comes back as 3. The root calculator handles this directly too.
