The quiet cost of the grace period
Most student loans give you roughly six months after leaving school before the first payment. Nothing may be due, but interest usually is not waiting: unsubsidized loans accrue interest every day of the grace period and add it to the principal when repayment begins. From then on you pay interest on that interest, which is why paying during grace — or choosing subsidized aid where eligible — trims the lifelong bill.

How much does a six-month grace period really add?
At 5.5% on $35,000 it is about $970 — and because it capitalizes, the repayment balance and every future interest charge grow with it. The rows above show the exact figures for your inputs.
Can I avoid grace-period capitalization?
You can pay the accruing interest before repayment starts, or take subsidized federal loans, which suspend interest during grace. Some private lenders also offer interest-only grace options.
