Short-term versus long-term rates
In the US, holding an asset for more than a year before selling switches you from short-term to long-term treatment. Short-term gains are taxed as ordinary income, so the 24% used here matches a mid-to-upper bracket; long-term gains sit at 0%, 15%, or 20% depending on taxable income, with 15% the most common. That gap is why a few extra days of holding can be worth thousands on a large sale.
What the calculator leaves out
The estimate applies one flat rate to the simple gain (sale price minus purchase price). Real filings can differ: commissions and improvements adjust the basis, losses can offset gains elsewhere, high earners may owe the net investment income tax, and state tax stacks on top. Treat the result as a planning number and confirm specifics with a tax professional before acting.

Veelgestelde vragen
When does a gain become long-term?
The day after you have held the asset for more than one year. Selling at 12 months and one day instead of 11 months and 29 days can cut the rate dramatically on a large gain.
What happens if I sell at a loss?
No capital gains tax is due on a loss. Losses first offset other gains, then up to $3,000 of ordinary income per year, with the remainder carried forward to future years.
Do I owe tax on crypto and stocks the same way?
Yes — the IRS treats cryptocurrency, stocks, ETFs, and most property the same: a sale or swap triggers capital gains rules based on holding period and your income.
