Where the range comes from

For a given height, the healthy weight band is simply the weights that produce a body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9 — the span most health authorities associate with the lowest overall risk in adults. Multiply your height in meters squared by 18.5 and 24.9 and you have the endpoints. Because BMI is a population screen, the best weight for an individual may sit slightly outside the band, especially for very muscular or older people.

Using your position in the range

If your current weight falls inside the band, maintaining it with regular activity and balanced eating is a reasonable goal. If it sits above, even a 5–10% reduction toward the band improves blood pressure and blood-sugar markers for most people; if below, gradual weight gain with strength training helps protect bone and muscle. Aim for changes of about 0.25–0.5 kg (0.5–1 lb) per week and involve a healthcare provider where health conditions are involved. This is informational content, not medical advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the healthy range the same for men and women?

Yes — the BMI-based band depends only on height. Men and women differ in typical body composition, which is why complementary measures such as waist circumference and body fat percentage can refine the picture.

Why is 24.9 the top of the range instead of 25?

Guidance describes the healthy band as BMI 18.5 to 24.9 because 25 is defined as the start of the overweight range. Using 24.9 keeps the upper endpoint just inside the healthy zone.
