How the tape method works

The U.S. Army screens body composition with circumference measurements rather than skinfolds or scans. For men the formula uses height plus the difference between waist and neck; for women it uses height, neck, and the sum of waist and hip. Each is a logarithmic regression developed to predict densitometry-measured body fat. Expect a few points of error either way: tape placement, tension, and posture all move the result.

Reading the screening maximums

Service standards set the highest allowable body fat by age and gender, and the numbers shown here approximate widely published screening tables. Commands may adjust for muscular builds, and the official regulation governs — always confirm current standards with your unit. If you are preparing for entry, training the neck and trimming waist circumference while keeping strength work usually moves the formula in your favor. Not medical advice.

Preguntas frecuentes

Where exactly do I measure?

Height without shoes. Neck below the larynx with the tape sloping slightly down to the front. Waist at the navel (men) or narrowest point (women), relaxed at the end of a normal breath. Hips at the widest point. Take three readings and use the average.

How accurate is the tape test?

It predicts body fat with a typical error of roughly 3–4 percentage points against lab methods. It can overestimate lean, muscular soldiers and underestimate some others, which is why appeal procedures using body-fat scanning exist.
