Slope, angle, and grade

Slope measures how fast a line climbs: it is the change in y (the rise) divided by the change in x (the run). A slope of 2 means the line gains 2 units of height for every 1 unit traveled sideways. The same fact can be stated three ways: as a ratio m, as an angle (arctan m measured up from horizontal), or as a grade (m × 100, the convention for road signs). A 10% grade, for example, is a slope of 0.1 and an angle of about 5.71°.

Reading the sign of the result

A positive slope climbs from left to right, a negative slope falls, and a slope of zero is perfectly flat. Only a vertical line — two points with equal x — has no defined slope, because its run is zero. The distance row is always defined, though: it is the straight-line separation of your two points, vertical lines included.

الأسئلة الشائعة

Why is the slope of a vertical line undefined?

Slope is rise divided by run. For a vertical line the run is zero, and division by zero has no meaning, so no number describes the steepness. This calculator reports that case explicitly instead of showing an infinite value.

What is the difference between angle and grade?

Both restate the slope. The angle is arctan(slope) in degrees, while grade expresses slope as a percentage — rise per 100 units of run. A 45° incline corresponds to a 100% grade because the line rises as fast as it runs.
