Torque versus horsepower

Torque is the engine's twisting force; horsepower is how fast that force can do work, which is why the formula multiplies the two ideas together — one horsepower is 550 foot-pounds of work per second, and carrying the units through gives the familiar constant 5252. A tractor engine and a sportbike can make the same power at very different torque and rev levels: the tractor pulls hard at low RPM, the bike spins fast with light torque.

Why every curve crosses at 5252

Because horsepower equals torque times RPM divided by 5252, the two plots on a dyno chart must intersect exactly at 5252 RPM — torque and horsepower read the same number there. Below it the torque curve sits on top; above it horsepower takes over. If a published chart shows curves that do not cross at 5252, one of them has been scaled or measured on a different axis.

常见问题

Which matters more for acceleration, torque or horsepower?

Horsepower determines how quickly the car can shed energy into speed at a given road speed, so it sets the pace. Torque shapes how the power arrives — a torquey engine needs fewer downshifts, but area under the horsepower curve is what wins the sprint.

Why 5252 in the formula?

It is a unit conversion: 33,000 foot-pounds per minute per horsepower divided by 2π radians per revolution rounds to 5252.11. The formula is exact in lb-ft and revs per minute.

Are brake horsepower and kilowatts the same thing?

They measure the same power at the crank. One SAE horsepower is 0.7457 kW, so a 300 hp engine is about 224 kW. European PS or cv ratings are metric horsepower and run slightly smaller than SAE hp.
