How the Widmark estimate works

One US standard drink delivers about 14 g of pure alcohol. The Widmark equation divides that alcohol by the water it mixes into — the body-water factor r is roughly 0.68 for men and 0.55 for women — then subtracts about 0.015% BAC per hour that the liver burns off. A 180 lb (82 kg) man peaks near 0.05% after two drinks, while the same two drinks land a 130 lb (59 kg) woman near 0.08%, the US legal driving limit.

Why real BAC may differ

Food in the stomach slows absorption and lowers the peak, while drinking quickly on an empty stomach overshoots the estimate. Carbonation, body composition, sleep, and medications all shift results, and elimination rates vary from roughly 0.010 to 0.025% per hour between individuals. Personal breathalyzers, and above all licensed drivers refraining from drinking, beat any formula.

What counts as one standard drink?

In the US: 12 oz of 5% beer, 5 oz of 12% wine, or 1.5 oz of 40% spirits. Each contains about 14 g of pure alcohol. Craft beers and generous pours often count as 1.5–2 standard drinks.

How long until I am at zero?

The body eliminates roughly one standard drink per hour. The calculator divides your current estimate by 0.015% per hour, but individual rates vary, so treat the figure as a floor — only time sobers you up.

Why does sex change the estimate?

Women carry proportionally less body water, so the same amount of alcohol concentrates in a smaller volume. Hormonal differences in alcohol metabolism widen the gap further, which is why the Widmark factor r is lower for women.
