Where the ideal weight formulas come from

Each formula starts from a base weight at 5 feet (152 cm) and adds a fixed amount for every inch above it. The oldest shown here, the Hamwi formula from 1964, was created for quickly estimating dosing weights in clinical settings. The Devine formula from 1974 became the standard for adjusting drug doses and is still the most widely cited, which is why this calculator shows it as the headline result. Robinson and Miller refined Devine with more recent population data and add weight slightly more slowly per inch.

Why the answers differ — and what to do with them

Because the formulas use different base weights and per-inch increments, a person can see four results spread over several kilograms. None of them defines a weight you must reach: they ignore muscle, bone structure, and age. A more useful benchmark is the healthy BMI range shown in the results, which spans roughly 18.5–24.9 kg/m². Use these numbers as a conversation starter with a healthcare provider, not as a target — this calculator is not medical advice.

よくある質問

Which ideal weight formula is the most accurate?

None is definitively accurate — they are heuristics from clinical dosing practice. The Devine formula is the most commonly referenced, while the healthy BMI range from population studies is usually the better guide for general health.

Do the formulas work for very tall or very short people?

They lose accuracy at height extremes because the per-inch additions were fitted to average adult ranges. If you are under 5 feet, the linear formulas may underestimate, and above about 6 foot 4 inches they can overestimate a healthy weight.

How is this different from BMI?

The formulas output a single target weight for your height and gender, while BMI gives a range. Comparing the two is helpful: a Devine result near the middle of your healthy BMI range suggests the formulas agree for your height.
