Why minimum payments stretch for decades

A minimum payment is usually the greater of a small percentage of the balance or a flat floor like $25. Because it is defined proportional to the balance, as the balance shrinks so does the payment, leaving interest to nibble at nearly the same rate the balance falls — payoff times of 15 years or more are common on big balances. A fixed payment instead, which is what this calculator models, accelerates automatically as interest shrinks.

よくある質問

What if my payment only covers the interest?

Then the balance never falls. The calculator flags this case — the fixed payment must exceed the monthly interest charge, which is balance × APR ÷ 12.

Does this include annual fees or new spending?

No. Model the balance you carry today and keep new charges off the card; every new purchase restarts interest on the full daily balance in most cards.
