Ratios and proportions in everyday use

A ratio compares two quantities by division, and dividing both parts by their greatest common factor produces the simplest equivalent form: 16 : 24 becomes 2 : 3 without changing the relationship. A proportion states that two ratios are equal — A : B = C : X — and the missing term follows from cross multiplication, X = B × C ÷ A. Recipes scaled for more guests, map scales, and fuel-to-oil mixes are all proportions in disguise, and the decimal form shown with each answer makes the comparison ratio easy to reuse in a spreadsheet.

Questions fréquentes

Can the ratio parts be decimals?

Simplification needs whole parts, so enter positive integers there. The proportion tab accepts any numbers, including decimals and negatives (except a zero for A).

How is a ratio different from a fraction?

A fraction expresses one part out of a whole, while a ratio compares two separate quantities. They are related — 2 : 3 means the first quantity is 2/3 of the second — and the percentage row shows exactly that comparison.
