How GPA is computed

Each letter grade maps to points on the 4.0 scale, where an A earns 4.0, a B earns 3.0, and so on down to 0 for an F, with plus and minus grades stepping by 0.3. Every course contributes the grade points of its grade times its credit value. Your GPA is the sum of all grade points divided by the sum of all credits, so a five-credit course moves your average five times as much as a one-credit seminar.

Tips for accurate results

Use the credit hours your school assigns, not the weekly class hours — labs and seminars often carry fewer credits than lectures. If you want a cumulative GPA across several terms, enter every course from every term in one list. Because the calculation is credit-weighted, leaving a low grade in a big course out will noticeably inflate the result, so include everything for an honest picture.

Questions fréquentes

Is A+ worth more than A?

On this calculator both count as 4.0, matching the common 4.0 scale. Some schools award 4.3 for an A+; if yours does, keep the A+ selected but remember the ceiling here is 4.0, so the result will be slightly conservative.

How do I include pass/fail courses?

Most schools exclude pass/fail courses from GPA entirely, so leave them out of the list. Include only graded courses with the credits and letter grades shown on your transcript.

What is a good GPA?

It depends on your goals. Many graduate programs look for roughly 3.0 or better, competitive scholarships often expect 3.5 or higher, and a 4.0 is a perfect straight-A record. Your advisor can tell you what matters for your specific plans.
